THE RIGHT TO USE A PORTION OF THE ELECTRICITY PRODUCED IN THE GOLICA PUMPED-STORAGE HYDRO POWER PLANT WAS TRANSFERRED TO DRAVSKE ELEKTRARNE MARIBOR

The right to use 20% of the electricity produced in the Golica pumped-storage hydro power plant (ČHE), which has so far been used by the company ELES, d. o. o., and the obligations arising from this right have been fully transferred to the company Dravske Elektrarne Maribor, d. o. o. (DEM), where in accordance with the activity of DEM – electricity production from renewable sources – they belong.

The facility of the Golica pumped-storage hydro power plant was designed in 1988 as a reservoir hydro power plant (first phase of construction), with the small pumped-storage unit Hollgraben, approximately one hundred metres below the Sobota dam. It became a pumped-storage hydro power plant in accordance with the classification of the electric power facilities in the second phase of construction, which was completed in 2010. The pumped-storage hydro power plant exploits part of the Bistrica river basin, the largest and highest source of which is in the territory of the Republic of Austria and whose natural channel flows into the Drava River in the town of Muta in the Republic of Slovenia. Due to the encroachment on the basin of the Bistrica River (the damming of the Sobota, i.e. Koralpa) and the Drava River (also) in the territory of Slovenia, an agreement was concluded between the Republic of Austria and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on a joint project in the following ratio: the company Kelag – the Republic of Austria 80% / the company Elektrogospodarstvo Slovenije (EGS) – Republic of Slovenia 20%. The current shareholder in Austria is the company Kelag (80%), while the portion entitled to Slovenia has belonged to the Slovenian system operator ELES (20%). The company Kelag also fully manages the pumped-storage power plant (production, regular maintenance, investment maintenance, etc.), while the company ELES, based on a virtual valuation model, was proportionally involved in terms of the share of electricity produced and costs (production, regular maintenance, investment maintenance, etc.). At the end of February, all conditions were met in accordance with the contract for Dravske Elektrarne Maribor to take over the rights and obligations of the legal relationship in question.
