Following the successful installation of the first solar power plant in Prapretno, the project is now being continued with the construction of new Prapretno units 2 and 3 and the installation of the battery energy storage system. This is an important step in the transformation of the former landfill area into a source of sustainable energy and a continuation of a good practice that has proven to be an example of efficient use of space and green transition in the local and broader environment.
Key data of the project
Prapretno Solar Power Plants 2 and 3 will have a total installed capacity of 6.75 MW, which equals the installation of more than 12,000 solar panels. The average annual production is estimated at 6,865 MWh and is comparable to the supply of more than 1,500 households. The project also includes a battery energy storage system with an output of 7 MW and a capacity of 14 MWh, which will enhance the stability of the electric power system and enable a more efficient production adjustment to market needs.
Investment and timeline
The investment value amounts to EUR 10.85 million exclusive of VAT, of which more than EUR 4 million is being co-financed by the European Union’s Cohesion Fund. The completion of works and the commissioning is anticipated for spring 2026. The power plant is planned to be operable for 30 years.
Signing the contract with the contractor
After a completed public call, the contract with the company, RIKO, celovite tehnološke rešitve d.o.o., was concluded on 3 September 2025 for the implementation of design, supply, installation and start-up of Prapretno Solar Power Plants 2 and 3 and the battery energy storage system. In doing so, the project has officially reached the realisation phase, which will result in new sustainable energy solutions for the region and broader Slovenia.
Importance for the region and the HSE Group
The power plant is located in the municipalities of Trbovlje and Hrastnik on a recultivated area of a former landfill, where post-closure measures are no longer being implemented. The installation of Prapretno 2 and 3 marks a continuation of the transformation of degraded areas into energy-efficient solutions and further contributes to an increase in the proportion of renewable energy sources in Slovenia.
The project is the result of good cooperation between Holding Slovenske elektrarne and the local communities, i.e. the Municipality of Trbovlje and the Municipality of Hrastnik. This cooperation was further enhanced with the conclusion of an agreement on mutual cooperation in the field of development projects concerning renewable energy sources in November 2024.
Prapretno Solar Power Plant is also compliant with the national and European strategic objectives and the HSE Group’s development plan that aims to increase the scope of production from renewable sources, reduce the carbon footprint and enhance energy independence.
